Throughout all water training, as a diving professional, you must be equipped with a properly fitted Total Diving System.
As a professional, you must be equipped with at least all the student equipment (mask, snorkel, fins, buoyancy compensator with mechanical inflator, weighting system, air supply system with tank, primary regulator and alternate air source, dive computer, wetsuit suitable for the environment), in addition to:
- A Surface Marker Buoy (SMB)
- An emergency signaling device on the surface
- A cutting tool
- A compass
Candidates of the Diving Professional programs must use a professional-level Total Diving System.
The training during this course takes place in Playa Flamingo, which is very convenient for practicing diving skills.

An active Assistant Instructor can teach, supervise, and issue recognition cards or certifications for Try Scuba, Scuba Skills Update, and Perfect Buoyancy.
In addition to the tasks of a SSI Divemaster, an active Assistant Instructor can also:
- Teach the academic sessions and pool/confined water sessions of the Open Water Diver program under the indirect supervision of an active Open Water Instructor.
- Supervise and directly evaluate the surface skills during the open water training dives of the Open Water Diver program under the indirect supervision of an active Open Water Instructor.
- Become a Specialty Instructor for some SSI specialty programs.
